It was a very busy month both personally and in terms of hobby and now at least I can say with certainty that I won't have anything more to do in March...<br />
<br />
Right, where to begin? I guess at the beginning is a very good place to start;<br />
<br />
March saw a desperate scramble to finalise an army for an Event at WS10; Warzone Wednesbury. It's the first event I've been to in about a year and I'd actually been preparing this list from about December of 2017. My list was as follows:<br />
<br />
HQ<br />
Typhus<br />
Lord of Contagion<br />
<br />
Troops<br />
20x Poxwalkers<br />
5x Plague Marines<br />
5x Plague Marines<br />
<br />
Elites<br />
3x Deathshroud Terminators<br />
Plague Surgeon<br />
Tallyman<br />
<br />
Fast Attack<br />
3x Myphitic Blight Haulers<br />
<br />
Heavy Support<br />
Plagueburst Crawler<br />
<br />
Lord of War<br />
Mortarion<br />

<br />
<span id="goog_1450831776"></span><span id="goog_1450831777"></span>The pictures above show the full list together as well as a decent look at the effect on Mortarion's wings. Everything is WYSIWYG for the list so equipment correlates. Mortarion's wings went through several experiments before arriving at this look that is almost finished but for the veins. I tried to do a wash based brown scheme where I layered brown washes over one another to create a dark brown leather look. I liked the colours but unfortunately I hadn't done the blends correctly so instead of smooth transitions I had... TIDE MARKS!!! Next I tried the same sort of effect but with red. I liked it but because of my light palette for the army the wings just overpowered everything. What I eventually settled on was a bit of a risk but hopefully you'll agree that it worked out well. Green Stuff World have released a range of colour shift paints and what you're seeing there is about 6 layers of Martian Green which shifts from green to purple. Kind of reminds me of both oil on water and house flies which is absolutely perfect for this army! I tested it on the wings of Typhus' and the Deathshrouds' flies first so he ties in with them as well. I'm very very pleased with the look of the army and...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
SO WAS EVERYONE ELSE!! If you can't read it that's my award for Best Painted Army! I was so happy to win this that I let out a very high pitched "yay" as it was announced! I think I deafened half the competitors... Worth it. In terms of the games themselves I really enjoyed them but I think my lack of experience with the army and the edition showed as I was only able to win one of five games... I'm not too fussed with being competitive though; I'm all about the painting and having fun. If it's not fun then what's the point of playing the game?! That's a whole blog post in and of itself though so I won't rant any further.<br />
<br />
So following on from that I was really riding the hobby wave and decided to get stuck into something new and completely different to anything else I've painted. I'd got myself a Dark Elf Sorceress for Christmas intending to use her as a Silver Tower participant and thought she'd be a great test model for a Daughters of Khaine colour scheme. Now I know there's the standard trope for Warhammer/AoS that the Dark Aelves have pale skin but I wanted to do something a little different so I made her look more like this...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JG1vxqKDrBE/Wskd5TIs8pI/AAAAAAAACFA/U4DsONYpk-cGGkpAVvLXbygpYqlvCObOwCLcBGAs/s1600/TUYJ8002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="901" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JG1vxqKDrBE/Wskd5TIs8pI/AAAAAAAACFA/U4DsONYpk-cGGkpAVvLXbygpYqlvCObOwCLcBGAs/s320/TUYJ8002.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>

<br />
I know, yet another red cloth! I tried to do an ocean blue colour in preparation for the Deepkin but is just wasn't working for me so I went back to what I know I can do and can do well. Now the lava was something I've wanted to do for a while; I helped out with the scenery for the WS10 AoS event earlier this year and I was asked to do... Lava. From there I realised I really enjoyed it so I tweaked how I did it then (and by tweaked I mean added several colour stages for smoother blends) and when the sea blue didn't work out I decided my Daughters of Khaine would be based in Aqshy; the Realm of Fire. I love how dynamic the model is even though she isn't in a particularly dynamic pose. It lends itself perfectly to the thermals coming off of the lava! I did have a little issue with the gold against the tanned skin but a good friend of mine (@wilsongrahams, if you want to check out his insanely awesome work on Twitter) suggested a very very thin glaze of Nihilakh Oxide over it (Retributor Armour, Agrax Earthshade, Retributor Armour, Auric Armour and highlight with Stormhost Silver). The effect, as you can see, is just to make the gold stand out without losing it's "goldness"; it just helps to distinguish it from the skin. Since completing her I've been planning a full Daughters of Khaine army with Morathi at the centre. That model is amazing! Well, both models seeing as she has her two forms. GW are really knocking it out of the park lately with new models and I'm loving the Melusai most of all. Can't wait to get to the Temple Nest and start painting up some of them!<br />
<br />
At the moment I'm working on a squad of Rubric Marines for my WS10 painting challenge. True to Tzeentch/form I've changed the colour scheme again and I'm now using another Colour Shift paint; Psychotic Illusions. This one transitions from turquoise to a lighter purple and really suits Thousand Sons armour. I'm debating how to approach the stripes and I'm not sure whether to introduce another Colour Shift paint or go for the traditional yellow/blue. Haven't decided yet. I'm just letting my hobby intuition lead me on this so stay tuned.<br />
<br />
And that was March! A crazy month and a lot was painted and learned. Turns out I am capable of painting a lot but I enjoy it more when I get to paint at a leisurely pace. I've also confirmed that I'm not very good at 40k as a game. I enjoy it but in a competitive setting I'm not great at it. I much prefer painting. I hope you've enjoyed reading about my month and I'll be back in a few weeks with my April update.DarkPhoenixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08427785071429212119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286461420663847485.post-40911977487097705222018-02-26T21:06:00.001+00:002018-02-26T21:06:46.443+00:00RenewalSooo... My last pledge went really well! June 2017 and a promise to post each week... Boy was I naive! Life just really catches up on you.<br />
<br />
Well where should I begin? In my last post I mentioned my Thousand Sons being my main project and a small force of Death Guard slowly taking shape. Well that flipped on its head and now Death Guard seem to have become my main project! There is a reason for it and that's due to my gaming club (WS10 Gaming) running an event at the end of March. Now when I signed up for this the Thousand Sons codex had been announced as "soon" but with no date and I couldn't risk creating a list for it to be all but invalidated the month before; my painting speed could not handle that so I took the safer option of using the Death Guard. As anyone who has read any of my previous posts will know (or anyone that knows me will know) I am a slow painter so my other projects have taken a bit more of a back seat to focus on the Death Guard. Most of the army is either complete or almost complete and Mortarion is getting closer by the day. In order to keep up momentum I am using the hobby streak hashtag on Twitter (if you want to follow said progress my Twitter handle is @lukanwhitehouse). <br />
<br />
So here's the part where I renew my pledge to post. Again. This time I won't be so naive as to suggest a weekly update; instead I plan to come back at least once a month to update on my hobby progress, colour schemes, techniques, discuss releases etc. I'll even set a calendar reminder so I don't forget this time! Hopefully some of you will come back to read, maybe some new people will join us as well but I hope everyone will at least enjoy reading what I write and show.DarkPhoenixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08427785071429212119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286461420663847485.post-881384477093988742017-06-22T22:19:00.001+01:002017-06-22T22:19:44.254+01:00Return from the WarpWell I've been away for some time huh?! So much has happened... My Necron army grew and then I lost inspiration for it so I sold it on, SO MANY NEW MODELS!!! Finally a whole new edition has just hit the shelves so I figured what better time to get back to the blogosphere than now?<br />
<br />
I've rededicated myself to the Chaos Gods and while I was focusing on Tzeentch completely the new Death Guard models in the Dark Imperium set were too good to pass up! Plus I want to field all of the Daemon Primarchs when they get released and I can't have them sat alone on a shelf... they need friends. I'm also getting into Age of Sigmar as well and even recently played in a tournament in which I didn't come last. As you can probably guess I am also playing Tzeentch there too but I do have a force of Sylvaneth which I dip in and out of when I need to switch away from blue and craziness. Or even blue craziness (there's some of that going on as well),<br />
<br />
So back to current projects; My main project is my Thousand Sons army and I'm making some excellent progress. Magnus is really coming along, my Knight has had yet another recolour but this one is going to stick I've also got 20 of the new plastic Rubric Marines on the go, Scarab Occult, Tzaangors and I'm also working on a few vehicles. For my Death Guard I have the contents of two Dark Imperium boxes (I traded my Primaris with a friend). Sylvaneth are a labour of love and I'm not sure when I'll go back to them but they're there ready and waiting. Might make an effort to finish Alarielle once Magnus and my Knight are done. Finally there are the Tzeentch Arcanites and Daemons that are ongoing and I'll do a separate post on what is going on there.<br />
<br />
So I'm planning to create a new post each week and they'll follow my painting as usual but also my experiences with 8th edition and thoughts on it. Stay tuned!DarkPhoenixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08427785071429212119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286461420663847485.post-83736224555533668912015-09-28T22:41:00.001+01:002015-09-28T22:41:22.571+01:00Technological AdvancementJust because a civilisation is over 65,000,000 years old doesn't mean they can't make changes to their already amazing technology. Today the Crypteks from the Suhbekhar Dynasty have started to utilise a new type of energy and have decided to roll it out with the Deathmarks.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xDhxxKY98xc/Vgmz_yl8jbI/AAAAAAAACDI/vQiLH8hII2M/s640/blogger-image--799535407.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xDhxxKY98xc/Vgmz_yl8jbI/AAAAAAAACDI/vQiLH8hII2M/s640/blogger-image--799535407.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">On the right you can see how I've been painting energy up until now and on the left you can see how I will be painting it in future. Well except the orbs... I need to repaint those ones as I messed up a bit but it's an easy fix.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The reason for the change is that I tried to paint the portal on my Monolith and with my current scheme and it looked flat and dull. It ruined the depth of the metal work and it really needs to be redone but the question I faced was how do I fix it?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I took to Google and YouTube (my first stops for any issues of this type) and found a few ways of painting orange but I didn't like what they were doing. Then I saw a tutorial where orange was involved but as a mid-highlight as opposed to the whole thing and it clicked with me. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">For anything that isn't a centrepiece model I've decided to simplify the process to just three colours; Evil Sunz Scarlet, Troll Slayer Orange and Yriel Yellow but for HQ models and centrepieces I'll add in more shades and blending but for speed I'll take the less complicated route with infantry and such. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So that's all for tonight! Over the next few weeks I'll repaint the orange I've already done and then going forward I'll be going down this route for energy.</div><br></div>DarkPhoenixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08427785071429212119noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286461420663847485.post-27907956210264636452015-09-14T23:33:00.001+01:002015-09-14T23:39:56.111+01:00Coding ErrorsHello! So it's been a little while but I've had an exam so apologies. I do have another two to do but nothing just yet so I have a little spare time which I'm using to catch you up on my hobby progress so far.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hPz5uj5cNX4/VfdK5SWUKpI/AAAAAAAACB4/wVnhX8bxPSA/s640/blogger-image--141392200.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hPz5uj5cNX4/VfdK5SWUKpI/AAAAAAAACB4/wVnhX8bxPSA/s640/blogger-image--141392200.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On the 5th September I took a trip to Warhammer World with some of my friends and I decided I was going to take a 1500 point Necron list. I'll go into the details of the list in another post because that's an entry in and of itself but in order to do this I had to get my shop on! I had a lot to buy and assemble to make my list so I bought five Deathmarks, three Wraith and a Cryptek, I already had a Monolith, a Catacomb Command Barge, a Spyder, six Scarab bases and 20 warriors and I borrowed 10 Immortals and a Ghost Ark from another friend. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now I'm not the fastest modeller or painter but I don't think I did too badly given that I basically had a week to get it all at least built and I gave it a good go with the painting. I did cheat a little though and I bought some silver Tamiya spray paint. That stuff stinks to high heaven but it meant I got so much base coated in a really short space of time (including four of my five Lychguard). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I will admit I did cheat a little by asking my commission painting friend Nigel to paint the metallics of my vehicles but that's only because I didn't want to mess up the look. I'll do the rest myself now that I have a point of reference to work from and I still need to do the energy on both the barge and the monolith. I painted the Overlord for the barge myself.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also managed to paint the Spyder, I've got one of the Lychguard done, one Scarab base is done and the rest aren't far off and my Cryptek and Deathguard are silver, washed and drybrushed. Unfortunately I didn't have time to get the Warriors done too but as I'm not giving them any blue (they aren't important enough in social status to be blue) they really won't take long.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I know this has been a wall of text and I apologise but I wanted to get the explanation out of the way before adding the pictures (with the exception of the one above). That shows what the Lychguard will look like when finished and the Overlord gets more limelight (attention seeker!) so enjoy the gallery and thanks for reading!</div>

Never one to turn down painting tips I gave it a go less than 10 minutes ago and he was definitely right. The extra highlight has taken it from this:<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CUIlXGV0lh4/VdLehXBFfVI/AAAAAAAACBc/khNTyEYziPY/s640/blogger-image--1533493829.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CUIlXGV0lh4/VdLehXBFfVI/AAAAAAAACBc/khNTyEYziPY/s640/blogger-image--1533493829.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
To this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CAuMzjsYPa0/VdLei2bzE_I/AAAAAAAACBk/klOm8NqpW1Y/s640/blogger-image-1983463954.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CAuMzjsYPa0/VdLei2bzE_I/AAAAAAAACBk/klOm8NqpW1Y/s640/blogger-image-1983463954.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It's subtle but it does have a little more pop to it. Not so much that it changes the overall look but just enough to give it a touch of "wow". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I also thought I'd add my "how to" in here because I didn't in the last one!! I'm an awful blogger...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Ok so the silver was easy; Leadbelcher, Agrax Earthshade, Leadbelcher (I drybrushed because I'm lazy and it's quicker) and then an edge highlight on the glyphs on his chest, arms and hands with Runefang Steel.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The blue starts life out as Macragge Blue, then is edge highlighted with Sotek Green, Temple Guard Blue and the final highlight I added this morning was Baharroth Blue (my friend suggested mixing Temple Guard Blue with white but I took the easier route again!).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The orange is a base of Jokaero Orange, followed by Troll Slayer Orange, then Fire Dragon Bright and finally Lugganath Orange. If you do this yourself you'll get to this point and notice that the orange is looking decidedly lacklustre but fear not because we're not quite finished yet. Over the work we've just done we add a slight wash of Fuegan Orange. As you apply it, it does look like you've just undone all the work you've done but fear not because as it dries the highlights do come through, just a bit more intensely orange than before. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The black bits were painted with Matt Black from The Army Painter (Abaddon Black is a bit on the glossy side for what I wanted to achieve but it's a perfectly fine paint), then highlighted in my new favourite black highlighting method; Skavenblight Dinge and Stormvermin Fur. It creates a darker highlight than the Eshin Grey/Dawnstone combo so it doesn't distract from the rest of the model (plus I wanted something different to my Black Legion which is highlighted that way). My next project that I may start at some point this week will be my Lychguard. I have a crap ton of Scarabs too but I want them crawling over stuff so I need terrain before I paint them.</div>
<br /></div>

I have to say that I had a lot of fun painting him although I was a little worried about the colour scheme but I think it turned out ok.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-odGnOgVigB4/VdCvyKbx0SI/AAAAAAAACBE/hfD36b5gROU/s640/blogger-image--1143147400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-odGnOgVigB4/VdCvyKbx0SI/AAAAAAAACBE/hfD36b5gROU/s640/blogger-image--1143147400.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I had already painted a warrior as a test subject and I liked the scheme but I only painted his shoulders in blue. There was a lot more to paint blue on this guy! I also had a lot of glow effect on the warrior and while I do like it, it kind of killed the rest of the scheme so I decided to drop it because of the amount of Orange on this guy. If I had done the glow effect then I may as well have painted the whole model in orange which defeats the point of having a colour scheme!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o0haxh8RXxQ/VdCvwDfxfsI/AAAAAAAACA8/ZkPtUMt5sVY/s640/blogger-image-1304447594.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o0haxh8RXxQ/VdCvwDfxfsI/AAAAAAAACA8/ZkPtUMt5sVY/s640/blogger-image-1304447594.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I did add an extra colour to the scheme by adding in some black. The reason I did this was because the blue and the orange together are a little jarring which is fine in small amounts but in the amounts that there are on this model of both colours it would have been far too much and the silver wasn't dark enough to break it up so I added in a touch of black. It's not a lot but it just enough that the bright colours aren't overbearing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-es11qdts25g/VdCvzu3L0SI/AAAAAAAACBM/IOV628-z72s/s640/blogger-image--1752103214.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-es11qdts25g/VdCvzu3L0SI/AAAAAAAACBM/IOV628-z72s/s640/blogger-image--1752103214.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I also deliberately chose a darker colour for the bases of my Necron army so that the bases don't detract from the models themselves but also so that it isn't a riot of colour that is less pleasing to the eye and more assaults it in an almost Slaaneshi manner. That's not what I want for this army so it seems like I'll be walking on a knife edge with the colour scheme. Too much of any colour will saturate the models which is going to be a lot of fun when it comes to the vehicles... Necron vehicles tend to invert their colour schemes so spot colours become main colours. I'm toying with the idea of utilising the colours with a different technique which will keep them looking cohesive but distinctive at the same time. Not sure how I'll do it yet but I have a few ideas that I want to run past my friends who are commission painters to see if I can do it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9TtKQj3CTOs/VdCvubA9hUI/AAAAAAAACA0/Po5xsupe-8M/s640/blogger-image-196548805.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9TtKQj3CTOs/VdCvubA9hUI/AAAAAAAACA0/Po5xsupe-8M/s640/blogger-image-196548805.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So that's the start of my new army. Let me know your thoughts and if you have any suggestions for when I get to the vehicles please don't hold back!!!!</div>
<br />

Oh yes I'm back again and this time it hasn't been several months between postings! Result! Today I'm here to share with you a model that I've had for quite a while but lacked the inspiration to paint... Presenting for your viewing pleasure... Be'lakor!!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IqWBH4EbgJU/Vao5JsqaolI/AAAAAAAAB_4/RVrtTPuXtGs/s640/blogger-image--122023907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IqWBH4EbgJU/Vao5JsqaolI/AAAAAAAAB_4/RVrtTPuXtGs/s640/blogger-image--122023907.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
He has been a true labour of love and I've really shocked myself with the end result because he is an amazing model to paint. For a very large amount of time as I painted him it felt like I was making very little progress right up until the last few stages where he really seemed to come together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5EyVlgi0VD4/Vao5M_UyH1I/AAAAAAAACAI/s8thbOU1IIk/s640/blogger-image-1418335584.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5EyVlgi0VD4/Vao5M_UyH1I/AAAAAAAACAI/s8thbOU1IIk/s640/blogger-image-1418335584.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Be'lakor is almost universally painted black; he's the master of shadows so it makes sense. Most pictures I've seen of him have the star on his chest painted with a heat glow effect with the Reds and the yellows etc. For me that wasn't working as it didn't fit in with my army. I get that he's not a part of my army but I still like when everything fits and is cohesive so I started to think about the green that I use as a spot colour with my Black Legion. Once I hit on that idea it was just a matter of where to put the green. The eyes were an obvious choice but it needed more so the chest star was next. Once I'd painted them though it didn't seem like enough but I didn't want to overpower the model with green so I stole the technique I used on Isabella Von Carstein's sword and used it here for the Blade of Torment. It adds more green but is more subtle and doesn't overpower the model.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mZxaiRoozh8/Vao5OuyUqwI/AAAAAAAACAQ/QBoDD5NjxZk/s640/blogger-image-170580607.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mZxaiRoozh8/Vao5OuyUqwI/AAAAAAAACAQ/QBoDD5NjxZk/s640/blogger-image-170580607.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The gold is deliberately bright to offset the darkness of the rest of the model. I was worried I'd gone too bright but personally I think it worked well. His horns and claws were done in the same way I did my Bloodthirster so that they're dark and they blend but they're different enough from his skin but not so different that they draw attention.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QyZiqfRHIdk/Vao5LaGWTRI/AAAAAAAACAA/qz0meM9TgeE/s640/blogger-image--1246947077.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QyZiqfRHIdk/Vao5LaGWTRI/AAAAAAAACAA/qz0meM9TgeE/s640/blogger-image--1246947077.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So there we have it; the first Daemon Prince for your viewing pleasure! Let me know what you think.</div>
<br />

I haven't really posted recently as I've not had the time to (new and awesome job that I've had to settle into) but here I am to show you my latest work and my god he's beautiful if I do say so myself. May I present to you my first ever Greater Daemon of Khorne; a Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hrSG_iZpz44/VYdLqHdojjI/AAAAAAAAB_U/iUqnQf8X6sE/s640/blogger-image--1971653571.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hrSG_iZpz44/VYdLqHdojjI/AAAAAAAAB_U/iUqnQf8X6sE/s640/blogger-image--1971653571.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
He really is a gorgeous model and so much detail! I won't lie he has taken me a while to complete (I assembled him the day after I got him and I got him on pre-order) but he's been totally worth it. By the way the pictures I have are all pre-basing but I'm so proud of how he has turned out that I can't wait for the Agrellan Earth to dry.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DUQ0PVcS1tA/VYdLtnIzxaI/AAAAAAAAB_k/a-aDQHZx5mU/s640/blogger-image--1006016486.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DUQ0PVcS1tA/VYdLtnIzxaI/AAAAAAAAB_k/a-aDQHZx5mU/s640/blogger-image--1006016486.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I went for Unfettered Fury due to the fact that I wanted to go for the classic axe and whip combo for my first Bloodthirster and he has already seen battle with this combination. He was, as expected, a beast. Pure and simple. He ripped through two assault marine squads and killed a captain or chaplain or whatever he was in a challenge before finishing off a bike squad. He has yet to see battle fully painted though so that might be next...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jXJwQCgea4s/VYdLnIc7wnI/AAAAAAAAB_E/dtAYeGg3vC8/s640/blogger-image--780221239.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jXJwQCgea4s/VYdLnIc7wnI/AAAAAAAAB_E/dtAYeGg3vC8/s640/blogger-image--780221239.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
So his skin is the same as I did for my other Khorne daemons (start with Khorne Red and work our way up to Wazdakka Red with Nuln Oil over the Khorne Red and Bloodletter applied over everything else). I started with the skin as it's the largest area to cover so I figured I could do it in a messy way and speed things up with dry brushing. His veins were painted with Wild Rider Red just to make them pop from the rest of the body.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As he can be fielded with a Daemonkin force as well as pure Daemons I added a couple of spots of green onto him. The first being this star at the base of his back. This not only breaks up the mass of red on his back but also serves to tie him in with my CSM army where the spot colour is green. In every unit there is green somewhere (usually a chaos star accessory and/or eyes) so Mr B. Thirster gets a green star too so that he is cohesive. He also has green eyes just like the CSM that summoned him.</div>

As expected from a Greater Daemon of Khorne there were a LOT of skulls dotted around and they were done with a base of Stormvermin Fur, then a 50:50 mix with Ushabti Bone, then pure Ushabti Bone and then a very small highlight with White Scar. The horns were done with Skavenblight Dinge, then Stormvermin Fur and then highlighted with Karak stone. Funnily enough the hair was painted the same way just without the Karak Stone.<br />

I have to say I'm most impressed with how the flames came out. I know I'm good at fire but I think this is my best yet. I did this one a little differently and it's a combination of a few different techniques. Firstly I painted very thin layers of White Scar (took about four coats to get it pure white) and then gave it a Casandora Yellow wash all over. It settled in some places more than others so there was some automatic tonal variation to work with. From there my next step was going to be to give it a wash with Fuegan Orange but that works better where there's a definitive "outside area" to work with which this flame didn't have with the bulk of it being a solid surface area to work on so I switched it to a dry brushing with Troll Slayer Orange. Lightly though as I didn't want to overpower the yellow. Then came an even lighter drybrushing with Wild Rider Red (it's more orange-y than the others so it was a great transition colour) and an even lighter brush with Khorne Red. Finally a very very very very light drybrushing with Abaddon Black et voila! I did the same on the fire on the whip too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I really can't believe how well he's turned out! My next Bloodthirster (oh yes there will be more!!) will be a Bloodthirster of Insenate Rage which which comes complete with an absolutely huge two handed axe and looks very cool. I have a few big projects to get through but once I've whittled them down a bit then it'll be time to get my next Bloodthirster. Unless of course a new Greater Daemon is released because then I have to have one of those. It's the law. </div>

Yes you heard right, she's died more times than Buffy the Vampire Slayer (well actually the same amount of times) but she's back and it might be to stay... At least she's staying in my collection even if Games Workshop kill her off. Again. That would just be really bad form... But I digress. Meet the new and improved Isabella Von Carstein!!<div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I have to say for such a little model she's been a huge challenge (not least because the inspiration for her has stopped me painting my Black Legion guys so I'm behind on my painting challenge!!). There's so much going on with this model that the detail is enough to drive a person mad. The voices think so too, they tell me so every time I think about her! I kid, I kid.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RiIQY8fnGSA/VOpIftfy9YI/AAAAAAAAB8s/N-x6w9pa4Wc/s1600/IMG_2260.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RiIQY8fnGSA/VOpIftfy9YI/AAAAAAAAB8s/N-x6w9pa4Wc/s1600/IMG_2260.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The wall in the background was taken from the Garden of Morr and I used it because the roses on it matched the roses on Isabella so it created a cohesive theme throughout the model without looking forced or unnatural as you can see above.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7678svrkAEw/VOpIfgszQvI/AAAAAAAAB8w/HTxIy0a_sAA/s1600/IMG_2261.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7678svrkAEw/VOpIfgszQvI/AAAAAAAAB8w/HTxIy0a_sAA/s1600/IMG_2261.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now for the interesting bit; how I did it. There were so many techniques that went into this model that it's actually astounding to think of it. There's ink blending, wet blends, dry brushing, edge highlighting, glazes... That's just the stuff off of the top of my head and I'm pretty sure a very large chunk of my paint collection went into the finishing of this model and a huge amount of time too. Suffice to say she was not a quick job in the slightest and the easiest part to paint was the blood in the cup and even then it still took three different colours to do!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XKXOjDjMkm4/VOpMpxJ7h5I/AAAAAAAAB-Y/gPSRPA_cdBw/s1600/IMG_2275.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XKXOjDjMkm4/VOpMpxJ7h5I/AAAAAAAAB-Y/gPSRPA_cdBw/s1600/IMG_2275.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok so lets start shall we? Top to bottom; the hair was based with Jokaero Orange and then given a Fuegan Orange wash. I then started to highlight each individual strand of hair but it took forever and started to hurt my eyes so I switched to a small drybrush with Troll Slayer orange and then another even lighter highlight with Fire Dragon Bright and while I could have gone even lighter with the Edge paints I decided this was enough. The cape was an interesting one and for such an odd technique I think my first attempt came out quite nicely. Admittedly the wash could have been smoother but it's something I've learned for next time. The cape (and the skirt actually) started with a layer of Incubi Darkness and then washed with lots and lots of thin layers of Nuln Oil (I lost count how many actually). The ridges on the cape and the skirt were then highlighted with Kabalite Green and then Sybarite Green. After all that work and effort, I then painted over just over half of the cape with Celestra Grey in zigzags. A wash of Nihilakh Oxide came next which slightly overstepped the Celestra Grey onto the dark green layers to help facilitate a blend. Over all of this was applied numerous layers of thinned out Coelia Greenshade to blend the two sections together to (hopefully) create the image that she is materialising from spirit energy (as though Nagash has only just finished bringing her back).I'm not sure the effect is as grand as I was hoping as the cape is really small so it didn't give me much room to work with and as I tried to even out the Coelia Greenshade I ended up creating the opposite effect so it does look a little on the streaky side.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q8Zp_Z_EkAM/VOpIgkvqpyI/AAAAAAAAB88/V35ZBmcAxbs/s1600/IMG_2262.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q8Zp_Z_EkAM/VOpIgkvqpyI/AAAAAAAAB88/V35ZBmcAxbs/s1600/IMG_2262.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now the gold. The gold I loved painting and I slightly diverted from how I plan to paint Nagash here as I chose to base all of the gold areas in Screaming Bell and I'm so glad I did as it has created a much warmer gold colour than Balthasar Gold usually does though I was worried initially that I'd made the wrong choice as it didn't stand out very much from the orange of her hair because of the reddish hue of Screaming Bell. I continued anyway by washing it all with Seraphim Sepia (again a slightly more red and warmer wash than Agrax Earthshade) before layering up with Gehenna's and Auric Armour Golds. The shoulder pads didn't exactly turn out as I'd planned and I think I've figured out why (I love them all the same). Her skin and the shoulder pads were based with Rakarth Flesh, then they were given washes of thinned down Agrax Earthshade. The shoulder pads got more coats of the shade to make them darker and then given an edge highlight with Rakarth Flesh. I think the reason they didn't turn out like they did in the GW painting tutorial for Nagash (the basis for a lot of this model) is that the shoulder pad they do it for on Nagash has a lot of large flat surfaces whereas these pads are ridged but I like the effect anyway. Carrying on with her skin, I then gave it all a highlight of Rakarth Flesh before applying a few coats of thinned down Athonian Camoshade. I then highlighted again with Rakarth Flesh and I was planning to add a few highlights of Pallid Wych Flesh but once I got to that point I realised I liked the skin as it was. It's darker than I'd normally paint skin and looks unnatural so I kept it. For her eye make up I applied a few layers of really thin Druchii Violet and the notted the eye with Pallid Wych Flesh. I like that it's off white which lends to the gaunt appearance that I was aiming for. I didn't dot the pupils as again it makes her look creepy and unnatural (even for a vampire queen). </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xA_-oip6uwQ/VOpImlL8QXI/AAAAAAAAB9E/93bRKp9iGyY/s1600/IMG_2263.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xA_-oip6uwQ/VOpImlL8QXI/AAAAAAAAB9E/93bRKp9iGyY/s1600/IMG_2263.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The armour was actually one of my favourite parts of this model to paint and was quite simple; Naggaroth Night, Xerus Purple and Genestealer Purple. Still took a long time to get all the highlights just right and with the collar there was a slight war between the orange and purple paints over who got to be on the inside of the collar which almost led to her not wearing one but I perservered and eventually purple got the collar and orange stayed on the head. Her sword was painted black and then given an edge highlight of Kabalite Green, then Sybarite Green, then a wash of Coelia Greenshade, then Waywatcher Green (both thinned down) and then a fine highlight of Sybarite Green and White Scar was applied. Sounds simple but I kept getting shaky hands so I had to clean up the highlights a lot. That wasn't so fun. The lace was simply layered with thinned down Pallid Wych Flesh, then successive thin layers of Coelia Greenshade. I didn't want to go too crazy with the lace as it had the potential to completely dominate the whole model which I didn't want (believe me, I've seen some images where the only thing you really look at is the lace. I didn't want that for my Izzy). The skulls in the wall were painted in my usual way (Zandri Dust, Agrax Earthshade, Ushabti Bone and Screaming Skull) and the wall itself was simply successive drybrushing of the greys from Eshin Grey up to Dawnstone. when I'd finished the wall it looked like something out of a black and white horror movie which was cool but I'm not good with grey-scale otherwise it would have been a pretty cool idea to have a fully "black and white" army. I've seen a picture of a Necromancer done like it and it looked amazing. I'm just not good enough to be able to do it (not being self pitying here, I just know that it takes a lot of skill to convert colour to greys and have it look good which I don't know how to do yet). The roses on the wall and on Isabella were based with Khorne Red, washed with Carroburg Crimson and highlighted with Evil Sunz Scarlet. The leaves on the wall were simply Caliban Green and Kabalite Green but on her dress I had to add another highlight of Sybarite Green as they just blended right in and they were indistinguishable from the rest of the highlights. finally (well actually it was one of the first things I did) the base was sanded and then painted with Dryad Bark, then drybrushed with Gorthor and Baneblade Brown then given a coat of 'Ardcoat so that it looks like wet dirt. Of course I forgot that the effect would be lost with Matt Varnish and so I have to regloss the mud and the blood (which was the same as the roses except I added Blood for the Blood God over it). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V6aK1LsKs2s/VOpIm9_q6gI/AAAAAAAAB9I/4LmLd_DpqwQ/s1600/IMG_2265.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V6aK1LsKs2s/VOpIm9_q6gI/AAAAAAAAB9I/4LmLd_DpqwQ/s1600/IMG_2265.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So there we have it, the beginnings of my Undead army. I finished the Necromancer today too but I'd like to do him justice by giving him his own article as there's a lot going on with him too. Plus I've just noticed that I forgot to do the cover of his book so I haven't finished him at all... Damn. Next time you see the Necromancer though he'll be finished. Promise.</div>

It's almost midnight here and I'm having a little trouble sleeping so I thought this would be a perfect time to update you all on my painting challenge. Any regular readers will know that I'm engaged in a friendly painting challenge with my gaming group WS10 and my last post was about my January challenge which was completing three Justaerin Terminators.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This month I've gone bigger and started a Helbrute. The Powerfist and Multi-Melta Helbrute was a lot of fun to paint and this one is living up to that experience in that every new colour I add brings a little more of him to life. What you'll see below is the progress I've made on him over the past week which isn't bad. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-KueOpfP2tXU/VNf2fbAF1LI/AAAAAAAAB78/gD0vWBIklGU/s640/blogger-image--1516872121.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-KueOpfP2tXU/VNf2fbAF1LI/AAAAAAAAB78/gD0vWBIklGU/s640/blogger-image--1516872121.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As you can see I've blacked out all of the armour, painted the trim and I've started on the fleshy parts. Once they're done I'll base the silver metal parts and the grey for the bone parts and then begin with highlights.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The load out he has to me leans towards Slaanesh (long barrel gun and whips) so there will be some pink on this guy but I think he's man enough to carry it off nicely.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-2MRj_k9a0d4/VNf2k-ydFMI/AAAAAAAAB8U/8ThHAYkt-mg/s640/blogger-image-2109815661.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-2MRj_k9a0d4/VNf2k-ydFMI/AAAAAAAAB8U/8ThHAYkt-mg/s640/blogger-image-2109815661.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Even with the parts I messed up (couldn't get some pipes to fit where they were supposed to) I still think this is an amazing model and I have to thank my awesome mom for this as it was a Christmas present from her.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I've been painting this on my lunch breaks mostly with my time at home being split between several different projects; some Warhammer related and some not. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Now I have been a little naughty and spent some of my points on a biker body for my Lord conversion so I've already taken a hit to my painting points but I had enough so it's ok.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Anyway that's all the progress I have to show so far so adieu for now!</div>

As I write this I'm winging my way to work on a train that's faster than... Well it's faster than walking. To pass the time I thought I'd share with you all the results of my first monthly challenge that I mentioned in my last post.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wMc62gF0RVo/VM83fd6SrTI/AAAAAAAAB7c/rf68xCMtVc8/s640/blogger-image-1821244494.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wMc62gF0RVo/VM83fd6SrTI/AAAAAAAAB7c/rf68xCMtVc8/s640/blogger-image-1821244494.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Voila! My first three Justaerin Terminators. Now I did submit these a day late but I'm still counting them as my January challenge as I did most of the work in January and I don't want to get lazy by thinking that February's challenge is already done.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Dsfh-56jsJU/VM83hSnGonI/AAAAAAAAB7k/-mAx6BlwXb4/s640/blogger-image--72305243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Dsfh-56jsJU/VM83hSnGonI/AAAAAAAAB7k/-mAx6BlwXb4/s640/blogger-image--72305243.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The bases need tidying up and going for as long as I did without doing an edge highlight means that they're not as clean as if have liked but that's only apparent when you get them up close which I'm hoping that no one does. They will but I can hope.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

As much as I do love these models I just want to say one thing... Whoever thought that many rivets was a good idea needs their head examining because that was painful. I literally couldn't refocus my eyes for a good minute after doing the last two models rivets but I'm pretty sure there's no permanent damage so it's all good.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I chose to use a red energy for the melta as opposed to more of the green just to show that it's a different type of energy and to break up the huge amount of green in the unit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Overall I'm quite happy with the results and my February challenge will be my Helbrute and my Maulerfiend if I get time to do both. I also plan to paint up my Night Lords inspired Cultist this month as I've now got over 40 of the things and I only have 4 fully painted so I need to get cracking. I'd paint them as a unit but with how I'm painting them all differently each cultist takes a long time to complete and I have to work and eat and sleep unfortunately so they'll have to be painted alongside my challenge.</div>

This is in part for our upcoming tournament as there is a painted army restriction (three colour minimum, no grey plastic) but also as a way of getting through the mounds of new models we all got for Christmas. My challenge is to build up my Black Legion forces which I can do now that my exams are finally over!! As I keep spending money without actually painting anything I've also decided to resurrect the painting points system to go alongside it.<br />

<div>
I've decided that this month will be the month of my Justaerin Terminators as I've been using them a lot in battles lately and I'd like to field them looking complete. Also they were already started so I don't have to go mad making up for lost time. Tonight I finished the first of the unit which now shows me how to paint the others.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-P4qS5MoVG0Q/VLw1L8FeaLI/AAAAAAAAB5U/Q8uxrcDEVPs/s640/blogger-image--1245306902.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-P4qS5MoVG0Q/VLw1L8FeaLI/AAAAAAAAB5U/Q8uxrcDEVPs/s640/blogger-image--1245306902.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Now it has been a few months since I last picked up a paintbrush so my skills are a little rusty but overall I'm quite pleased with how he turned out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Hc6IEpxNtjY/VLw1OUbIf6I/AAAAAAAAB5c/yQVI2Z7u0Nc/s640/blogger-image--318050184.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Hc6IEpxNtjY/VLw1OUbIf6I/AAAAAAAAB5c/yQVI2Z7u0Nc/s640/blogger-image--318050184.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I wasn't overly impressed with the leather when I initially painted it as it didn't seem to really add anything to the model but as I painted the rest it helped to break up the black but in a subtle way which allowed the green (my army spot colour) to really pop against the dark palette.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So that's my first completed Justaerin Terminator. A word of advice if you're going to paint these; get used to rivets because there's a LOT of them on the armour plates. I think now that I've gotten myself started I'm actually going to enjoy this challenge and as a little side challenge I may try to finish a Cultist a month as well (they take me forever to paint so one a month should be more than enough!!) though if I can do more then I most certainly will. For now though I will focus on these Terminators.</div>

Strictly in a friendly match... Yeah...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a>The match was 2000 points between my Chaos Space Marines (oh yes, no Daemon allies this time) and Nick's Necrons which was the very first time I've ever played against them. Having never really paid much attention to their codex I didn't really know anything about them which meant the entire game was a 5 turn learning experience for me. I can very confidently say that they are an army I'll take more notice of when their new codex hits.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
I took a new and highly experimental approach with my list and used a lot of units I've never used before as well as only having one Psyker which was new for me though it meant my Psychic phase was over pretty fast for once. My list consisted of:<br />
<br />
<b><u>Chaos Space Marines</u></b><br />
<b><u>HQ</u></b><br />
Abaddon<br />
Be'lakor<br />
<br />
<b><u>Troops</u></b><br />
2 Units of 10x Chaos Cultists (one unit with a Flamer and one with a Heavy Stubber)<br />
10x Chaos Space Marines (Champion with Melta Bombs and unit had a Flamer)<br />
<br />
<b><u>Elites</u></b><br />
5x Terminators with a Land Raider with a Dirge Caster<br />
Helbrute with a Power Scourge and a twin linked Lascannon<br />
5x Plague Marines (champion with Melta Bombs)<br />
<br />
<b><u>Fast Attack</u></b><br />
Heldrake<br />
<br />
<b><u>Heavy Support</u></b><br />
Maulerfiend<br />
5x Havocs with 2x Lascannons, 1x Meltagun and 1x Missile Launcher and the champion had Melta bombs<br />
<br />
<b><u>Necrons</u></b><br />
<b><u>HQ</u></b><br />
Lord on a Command Barge<br />
<br />
<b><u>Troops</u></b><br />
2x units of 20x Warriors<br />
10x Immortals in a Night Scythe<br />
<br />
<b><u>Elites</u></b><br />
Triarch Stalker<br />
3x Wraith<br />
<br />
<b><u>Fast Attack</u></b><br />
10x Scarab Bases<br />
<br />
<b><u>Heavy Support</u></b><br />
Annihilation Barge<br />
2x Monolith<br />
<br />
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<br />
I'd like to say I had a plan for the list but I really didn't as I had no idea how half of these units would work in play. I played the Cultists and the Helbrute as the Helcult from the Helbrute dataslate and ran Abaddon with the Terminators.<br />
<br />
I played it safely (or so I thought) with my deployment by making sure as much of my army was in cover or had access to cover in the first movement phase and deployed my Havocs around my objective as I knew they wouldn't be moving anywhere. This was where I made my first mistake but more on that later. I deployed Abaddon and the Terminators in the Land Raider with my CSM running behind to use the tank for cover, ran my Maulerfiend and Plague Marines in the middle and my Helbrute and Cultists on the left behind a barricade. Unfortunately I didn't deploy my Maulerfiend close enough to the 12" line or I'd have had a turn 1 charge which probably would have changed the game as it would have been against a Monolith. As it was though I couldn't quite make the charge so there my Maulerfiend was... All exposed...<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Helcult advanced to the barricade ahead of them... And that's where they stayed. The position of the buildings created a corridor that only allowed a few Cultists through at a time so while my Helbrute got off a few shots from his Lascannon the Cultists were being slowly shot apart so that my next movement phase consisted of just lining up more cans on the wall to take a bullet. With this unit it was so large that keeping it in cover actually worked against me and is something I'll have to remember in future.<br />
<br />
Going back to my Maulerfiend and the way I deployed it I actually made myself miss out on a turn one charge into a Monolith by deploying safely. My opponent has a tendency to deploy right at the limit of his deployment zone and we were playing on the wide table edges. I unfortunately deployed my Maulerfiend a little further back so he was in cover but if I had put him right at the edge of my deployment zone then after the movement phase I would have been within charge range! Would have had to have rolled pretty well for it but in the first two turns I was rolling a hell of a lot of 6's so I probably would have made it! As it happened I made it about half way up the board and ended up going three rounds with the Scarabs and their mental attack that reduced his armour value slowly but surely until eventually they tapped him and he turned to dust though it was a close call. It came right down to whether I could roll well enough to finish off enough Scarabs to last another turn but alas Tzeentch had gotten bored and left me so my dice rolling went from freakin' awesome to downright dreadful and my Maulerfiend got dusted.<br />
<br />
There were a couple of times that I could have gotten Be'lakor into come combat but I chose to keep him safe by flying him around casting invisibility whenever possible. In my first psychic phase I tried to be greedy and cast several powers and ended up not getting any of them off so in my second I changed tactics and threw way more dice than necessary at invisibility on my Maulerfiend to protect it which worked. I did also manage to throw a few dice at some other powers too so Be'lakor owned the psychic phase! I should probably mention that he was the only psyker on the board so even if he'd never used a psychic power in the entire game he would have owned the psychic phase. I do wish I'd gotten him into a combat situation at least once so that I know what he's capable of but from a defensive viewpoint keeping him mobile is definitely a good strategy.<br />
<br />
The many lascannons I had peppered throughout my army I made the mistake of dedicating to the Monoliths as I fell into the trap of "big=bad" and largely ignored everything else which was a huge mistake and I knew it as soon as I did it but I did it anyway. In the first round of shooting I knocked two hull points off of one of them and was determined to finish it off in the next. Unfortunately I only managed to take another one point from it before my Havocs were charged by the Wraith (which is what I should have been focusing on), my Land Raider was popped and my Helbrute took a glance and had to fire at the barge that glanced him. Although I had done a fair amount of damage to one Monolith it was at the cost of letting everything else in Nick's army run freely into mine.<br />
<br />
My Heldrake didn't really get to do much; by the time it had made it's minimum move and done a vector strike on something the Baleflamer had no targets and the one thing in Nick's army it would have torn to shreds with a single blast (the Scarabs) was already in combat so couldn't be shot at anyway! Next time I play against Scarabs I'll be committing the Heldrake to them first and instead of aiming to vector strike I'll count that as a bonus and aim to fire off the Baleflamer instead. In my defence though I didn't know what they could actually do with their armour value reducing ability. I also could have unloaded the Havocs into them for extra killing fun. Especially as they had a blast weapon which would have done lots and lots of damage to them.<br />
<br />
This battle wasn't really all that great for Abaddon either as his retinue got wiped out pretty quickly and he only got into combat with a Monolith that he didn't pop. Instead he got sucked into it which certainly wasn't good! He managed to knock off a hull point though so... No it was still a terrible match for Abaddon and I certainly won't be trying that again in a hurry! At least not without more vehicle damaging equipment at any rate.<br />
<br />
Another deployment mistake I made was with my unit of 10 Chaos Space Marines. I put them behind the Land Raider for mobile cover which was a good strategy I think but just not for this game. I realised far too late that they would have been better serving as a buffer between the Havocs and the Wraith that eventually sliced them apart. As it was my big guns got tied up in combat and by the time the CSM unit had reached them to help the Havocs were dead and the CSM ended up getting charged and butchered instead of the other way around. They also would have gotten in more overwatch shots than the Havocs did with rapid fire though it didn't help much when I finally did get to use it (stupid 3++).<br />
<br />
Finally I'll come to what I think was my unit of the match and that was the Plague Marines. I have 5 of the plastic ones that I had in the late 90's (they're in desperate need of repairs and the paint job shows just how young I was!!!) and I included them as a test really as I've never played Plague Marines before. Wow. That's all I can say. I probably could have utilised them better than I did but I'll put that down to a lack of experience; for example I didn't run them to the main objective in turn one (though they could easily have reached it) because I thought they had slow and purposeful but noticed in turn two that they don't have that rule. As a consequence of this they took a lot of fire when they finally did get to where I wanted them. I'm sure if I'd explained to Nick what I'd done he would have let me make the run move (he's good like that) but if I don't make mistakes I won't learn so I took the hit on that. They survived a Monolith attack, a Triarch Stalker attack and were finally taken down two turns later by 20 warriors but it was down to my bad rolling that they didn't survive even longer. If I'd made the run move to the relic objective I could have had them retreat with it towards my Havocs who were holed up in a ruin towards the back and been able to hold onto it.<br />
<br />
I may have lost quite badly (almost as badly as I did against Nigel and his Corsair list a few months back!!) but I definitely learned a lot about my units and what it is they're capable of. The next game I play will be a far more aggressive one in terms of units and in terms of strategy as I'm going for a Khorne/Nurgle list which should make for some interesting combinations... I've already made a couple of lists for the next game but I'm not quite happy with them just yet so they'll undergo some changes when I have a spare five minutes during the week (HA!!). As I quite liked the way some of these units worked I'm keeping them in but some things are changing so I can experiment with more units. I'll keep you posted about the next battle and I'll take some pictures next time!!!<br />

In fact I'm going to make the same promise and the only time I will buy anything new is if I need it for a game (as I've done recently) or if Games Workshop suddenly throw out a whole new bunch of models for my CSM or Daemons (I've got enough Tyranids and Undead to be getting on with for now!!)<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
It's list time everyone! Brace yourselves because this could go on for a while... I'll split this into things I have part painted and need to finish, things I've built but not painted (this will include anything I've sprayed but no base coats) and finally everything I need to build.<br />

7x Flesh Hounds<br />
10x Daemonettes<br />
<br />
Now that I'm done listing it has just dawned on me just how much stuff I have to work on! In my defence I've had to study a lot for exams for work so my hobby time has been cut into because of having to study a lot in a short space of time but this month will be my last exam so I can get back into painting a lot more. I also want 2015 to be a bit more of a gaming year for me as I still haven't yet found an army combination I really enjoy. I do have a reputation for being Psyker heavy but it doesn't really work so well in 7th as it did in 6th so I will be experimenting a lot more with lists to see what different units can do.<br />
<br />
I do have a tournament coming up soon so my focus will be on my Black Legion projects as I plan to use a Chaos Space Marine list which should be lots of fun and will shock the #WS10 guys as I'm known for my love of the Warp Storm that goes with Daemons but I do enjoy being unpredictable... I do plan to expand my book collection so I'll be looking at getting the Black Legion supplement in hardback, the Warzones for Apocalypse and getting more Imperial Armour books. I may be expanding my Codex collection too but that will definitely be something I think about much much later on. I quite like the idea of having all of the codexes on my shelves rather than just on my phone or my tablet. I'd be lying if I said there wouldn't be more model additions to my force as well (I know I said there won't be but I'm a realist and GW has a whole 12 months of release schedule and there's a rumoured CSM v Dark Angels campaign coming up) and that will obviously take priority over collecting codexes for armies I'm probably never going to own. With the exception of maybe one after I saw how they play last week but you'll hear more on that when I finish the write-up...<br />
<br />
What all of this means is that while I'm going to try to get even more involved with the hobby this year I'll probably end up a reclusive hermit talking to bits of plastic and requiring constant medication with how insane I'm probably going to go from all the painting I've got left to do and all the dice I'll be rolling. So happy 2015 and when rolling your many, many dice (and yes I'm ripping off The Hunger Games here); may the odds be ever in your favour! Unless you're against me and then may the odds be ever in MY favour!!<br />

The event was set on Port Maw and while I'll be focusing on my game, there were two others as well as the simultaneous games happening in America and Australia. All using the same scenario and the results of each battle were combined with the others to form a final result so not only was it a frantic and fast paced battle where a lot of things were blown up, it was also very important to achieve objectives and spend victory points wisely as the points earned in one battle can be the difference between victory and defeat for the whole scenario and the thought of letting down that many other players is quite... Motivating.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
During the build-up to the actual games the organizers put on challenges to motivate the players such as best picture of a painted general, whole army shots, writing our own fluff all with rewards of victory points. Other commitments prevented me from being able to join in on most of it as I wasn't able to pick up a paint brush much less finish a whole army but I did manage to take the time to write a few paragraphs of fluff and earned an extra victory point before the game even started.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
#WS10 did the games as a doubles tournament to enable those of us without the huge collections amassed over years (myself included) to be able to join in with each player providing 3,000 points each, I went with a Chaos Space Marines and Daemons force which consisted of;</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Abaddon, 4 terminators in a Land Raider, 7 Chaos Sorcerers (one in Terminator armour with the Mark of Tzeentch) for the War Coven (more on that a little later), one of each of the four Greater Daemons and Scabieiathrax (the Forge World GUO). My ally Nick also took Chaos Space Marines though his force was more Slaanesh focused with the big exception of a Lord of Skulls (again more on that later). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We were against a force of Astra Militarum and Tau and in the interests of fairness (and allowing them to deploy without having to literally pile their models on top of one another) we decided to just treat them as battle brothers. They fielded a lot of big guns (including a Tiger Shark, Riptide, a Baneblade and one of the variants) so it didn't look entirely well matched at first glance. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
During the first turn however, our smaller Chaos force proved that they may not be large in number but they can still hold their own! The AM and Tau both laid down some pretty heavy fire in their first turn including two 4 shot barrages and whatever else was in range but the Gods smiled on us and only a couple of models were taken out and even then they weren't important. Luckily my Sorcerers were left alone which was a very important part of the strategy of my army...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I'll tell you now about the War Coven so for those of you that have used this awesome formation I hope you'll excuse me. The War Coven is an Apocolypse formation from the main book that requires one lv3 Sorcerer and a minimum of one lv1 Sorcerer. The formation gains a new Psychic power in addition to any they already know which is a D strength vortex with a 48" range which on our board gave me effectively 2/3 of the enemy to target. The catch is that for each shot you fire (up to a max of 3 per turn) you have to sacrifice a lv1 Sorcerer which is why I had 6 of them. That way if any of them were killed I still had some shots left but if they weren't I had up to 6 D strength vortexes. With a free D weapon it was a pretty safe bet that once I used it the Coven would become a much higher priority target so I went all out on the first shot and created three of the little buggers. All but one model that it touched was wiped out and the one that survived was because I rolled a one to hit. Nick's Chaos Spawn had launched themselves up the board to hit the Tau and the Lord of Skulls, Nick's Keeper of Secrets and my Lord of Change followed closely as did the Bloodletters that I had summoned. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The way the battle went was quite interesting as even without planning to we created a sort of pincer effect by hitting the flanks first and moving inwards. This was sped along by the Spawn hitting a multi charge and the Lord of Skulls killing everything it charged while being kept safe by a 2++ (dirty I know but necessary. Trust me). I managed to also summon some Plague Drones which drew a lot of fire but as a free unit I didn't really care. In fact it drew fire away from the list I paid points for. As a bonus one did survive and locked a Riptide up in combat until we called the game which was rather handy. Those things are really tough and if it wasn't for the fact that they're so damned awkward to transport they would be an auto-include in all of my lists. Maybe I can get some Plague Toads from Forge World and proxy them in because they were really good and I'm glad I finally got a chance to use them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I also used my first Lord of War in a list and took Scabieathrax. I will be honest in that I probably didn't use him to the best of his ability because I tried to make sure he wouldn't be blown off of the table which left him with very few targets though his template breath weapon did wipe out all of the models it touched as he landed. I do wish I'd have brought him in where I originally planned to but when I did bring him in he was within range of Cursed Earth and therefore he didn't scatter. If I'd have landed him where I wanted to he would either have wiped out half of the infantry with a single breath or he would have scattered off of the table which would have been bad.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I was pleasantly surprised with Nick's Spawn unit with the amount of damage it did in two turns; firstly it took out a Tau unit of some description (I forgot what they were) then pulled a disordered charge into two different units and wiped out one and caused the other to turn tail and run. This was followed by the Lord of Skulls sweeping in and completely wiping out anything that the Spawn couldn't reach and/or damage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
In the final turn of our game I managed to pull off a pretty awesome slaying of the Tau Warlord in a pretty epic use of Abaddon's Finest Hour and using his sword to gain a few extra attacks in a challenge that had lasted two turns. A lucky hit to a shield drone caused her to lose the combat and she fled but rolled poorly so Abaddon was easily able to catch and kill the Tau leader which led to much celebration on our side. It was a close one in the end but us Chaos guys just about won. It was an interesting game and it is clear to me now that in Apocalypse even more than in 40k strategy is key. Yes the game is all about the big guns and mad gore-fests but a single mistake can easily cause half of your army to be wiped out so a plan is key. As my Warlord and his unit got caught up in the middle of the battlefield for a while, Nick and I had a flanking situation going where we were slowly but steadily both reducing the Tau and AM forces to just the centre of their deployment zone. My plan once I had dealt with the Tau leader was to move over to take out Yarrick of the AM as he was so very conveniently right behind the Tau line which suffered a huge hole with the death of Farsight and her many many drones. A hole big enough for Abaddon and his Terminators to charge through and end the Imperial commander's life once and for all... Next time for sure.</div>

Yes I know, it's been a very long time and for that I apologise but I've had a lot of non-hobby related things going on recently so certain things have had to be pushed onto the back burner and in order to make time for my hobby, blogging is one of the things... I'd be lying if I said that things weren't still crazy but I'm managing them better than before.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I won't bore you with pages and pages (that comes later) but I will give you a quick overview of everything that has gone on with the promise of more in depth reviews later on.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The biggest thing that has happened is that I've started a Vampire Counts army!! The reason for this is that I bought Nagash on an impulse and then thought I needed to justify the expense (I've still not taken him out of the box yet muh less painted him). I have however painted a Banshee, part painted a Necromancer and 20 Crypt Ghouls and started working on a Mortis Engine.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I played in a tournament style game at Warhammer world a few weeks back with a combined Daemon and Tyranid list and suffice to say that I now understand why they don't work together... More on that in an upcoming post.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My next big event is my first Apocalypse game with the awesome WS10 guys over at Pete's and I'm taking a CSM and Daemons list consisting of 14 models in 3000 points... I'm allied with more CSM against Tau and Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum or whatever they're called this week (cannon fodder is my preferred name...) so I'll have more on that after the 6th... </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That's basically it from me for now but look out for more posts to bring you up to speed with what I'm up to and working on.</div>

Real life; sometimes it's a real drag... Why can't we just be paid to sit at home and do what we love? Ok so maybe unemployment benefits aren't the way to go but still, a guy can dream. Be warned, this may turn into a long one and it'll be all words so if you want pretty pictures then you may want to pick another post as I've been off the blogging scene for a while.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Where to start... Ok so quite a few big things have happened to me recently in terms of the hobby and they both involve new armies so I guess that's where we'll start.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Never fear fellow Warp lovers, I'm not in any way, shape or form giving up on my Daemons or my CSM. They are still my favourite armies and they always will be so there will still be posts relating to them and my progress with those armies. That said, I am a bit of a traitor to the denizens of the Eye as my first new army is... Tyranids. Oh yes, the big bad bugs have invaded my hobby space (aka my bedroom) in a big way. Now why Tyranids I hear you cry? (Ok I don't but I can pretend you are so I am). Well as I sat down to paint yet another Black Legion marine I realised I'd had enough of them for a while and I needed some colour. I looked at my Daemons but recently inspiration has been lacking (I guess they're too busy waging war in the WHFB world to take the time to inspire me) and I did used to have some Tyranids (waaaaay back, many many years ago) so I decided to buy a Zoanthrope and the Hive Mind had it's talons into me.</div>
<div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
I'm attending an inter-club tournament at Warhammer World later on this month so I've been feverishly buying, assembling and painting a small force to use and so far I have 1 Hive Tyrant, 1 Carnifex, 1 Tervigon, 8 Genestealers (though one will pretend to be a Broodlord for the tournament), 3 Zoanthrope, 3 Warriors, 8 Ripper Swarms, 8 Hormagants and 48 Termagants. I've painted up a couple of them and the rest are either works in progress or unassembled. Sooooo much grey plastic! So much so I've been tempted on more than one occasion to commission my friends and very talented painters to help me out but I'm determined to get this done by myself. I'll make a post about Nigel and Graham some other time because I couldn't do their painting justice in just a couple of sentences but they're definitely worth checking out. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So with all of the Tyranid fever I sort of lost track of the releases and rumours so when Nagash was released I was taken completely by surprise. I wasn't around the last time he graced the warhammer world but I hear he was a big deal and his model sells pretty well on eBay. This model is AMAZING!! I was planning to buy one this pay day but I went into the Wolverhampton store to buy a banshee, some paint and replace a couple of my paint brushes and there he was all alone on the shelf looking very lonely. I'm terrible with shopping as I impulse purchase a lot so naturally I impulsively purchased Nagash. I haven't even assembled him yet as I know I don't have the right level of painting skills for him but this is where my second army comes in... I'm starting an undead legion army! Not just Vampire Counts or Tomb Kings but with the new rule books for End Times I can have both so my internal debate as to which one I prefer got steamrollered into non-existence. There were several techniques for Nagash that I needed to practice pretty badly as I'd never done then before and the first one was painting spirits so I painted a banshee. I'll do a post on her once I've caught up with everything else. The thing I love about Vampire Counts is that magic users aren't just another tactical option, they're completely necessary for the army to function. Without at least one Necromancer or magically inclined Vampie the entire army crumbles and dies. Literally. This gives me the perfect excuse to indulge my love of all things magic and no one can say anything because it has to be done that way. And with the new Lore of Undeath there are even more funky options for my Necromancy disciples. Well, disciple. I've got one Necromancer (aside from Nagash).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So with my new armies, let me recap my progress.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Painted and complete:</div>
<div>
1 Zoanthrope</div>
<div>
1 Banshee</div>
<div>
1 Tervigon (sort of, there was an accident and she needs repairing)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Part painted:</div>
<div>
5 Ripper Swarms</div>
<div>
8 Genestealers</div>
<div>
1 Necromancer</div>
<div>
1 Hive Tyrant</div>
<div>
1 Carnifex</div>
<div>
4 Tyranid Objective Markers</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Assembled</div>
<div>
8 Termagants</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Unassembled </div>
<div>
40 Termagants</div>
<div>
3 Warriors</div>
<div>
3 Ripper Swarms</div>
<div>
8 Hormagants</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once I've settled on a list for my upcoming tournament (I think I'm there I just need to run a couple of things by a couple of people) then I'll post it and discuss my thinking behind it all but I think for now you've all suffered enough. Ciao for now!!</div>

Oops.</div><div><br></div>Over the weekend (and the preceding week as I was off work for two days) I've been a rather busy little bee and not only started but also finished Typhus! I have to say that I'm so happy with him and how he turned out; in fact I surprised myself with just how well I managed to paint him (not to toot my own horn or anything).<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-DpRuEAtZlKQ/U8-n-DM4QJI/AAAAAAAAB38/KV1fot9au4U/s640/blogger-image-842408559.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-DpRuEAtZlKQ/U8-n-DM4QJI/AAAAAAAAB38/KV1fot9au4U/s640/blogger-image-842408559.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Voila! One host of the Destroyer Hive.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NBBc2N5s-_U/U8-n8GN7RwI/AAAAAAAAB30/7Cs86QsAVt8/s640/blogger-image--30844205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NBBc2N5s-_U/U8-n8GN7RwI/AAAAAAAAB30/7Cs86QsAVt8/s640/blogger-image--30844205.jpg"></a></div><br></div>I was going to paint him a while ago so I had done my usual paint scheme research already (moving house just screws everything up). What this meant was that I could start painting straight away. I chose the pre-heresy Death Guard scheme for two reasons. The first reason is a fluffy one in that that after being infested by the Destroyer Hive and becoming a mortal (ish) herald of Nurgle I very much doubt he'd have cared all too much about how his armour looks so it never made much sense to me that he would have re painted it. The second reason is that I saw a few pictures of both this model and the Forge World Typhon and thought that the Death Guard colour scheme was so much cooler than the green one.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5e3iICgP8y8/U8-oAeC-DNI/AAAAAAAAB4E/T1ppxfKWKmA/s640/blogger-image-185038904.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5e3iICgP8y8/U8-oAeC-DNI/AAAAAAAAB4E/T1ppxfKWKmA/s640/blogger-image-185038904.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">To get the green trim I painted the whole model with Death World Forest. Then dry brushed with Elysian and Nurgling Green with copious amounts of Agrax Earthshade between layers.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Since this model there has been a lot of work done in terms of my hobby (and the rest of my life but this is about the hobby) including the beginnings of a new army... Which is something that anyone coming here from my Twitter links will already be aware of but for those of you who have stumbled onto my page it will be a mystery... Unless you stumbled onto a later post and then made your way back to this one. In which case you ruined the surprise. But anyway, hope you like Typhus!</div><br></div>DarkPhoenixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08427785071429212119noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286461420663847485.post-20780910650969825912014-07-14T08:20:00.001+01:002014-07-14T08:20:25.705+01:00Lord of HeresyIt has certainly been a very busy hobby weekend for me! I don't know where the inspiration came from but I'm just not questioning it as I've gotten so much done and I'm still in the mood for more (unfortunately real life intends to get in the way of my inspiration kick and I've got to resist the urge to book time off work.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--NguPzFkbRc/U8OEqBAUOJI/AAAAAAAAB3E/pCu7h-YaD3U/s640/blogger-image-1554595142.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--NguPzFkbRc/U8OEqBAUOJI/AAAAAAAAB3E/pCu7h-YaD3U/s640/blogger-image-1554595142.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">To kick things off; voila! One Sorcerer of Tzeentch in Terminator Armour. In keeping with my green spot colour you'll notice that his staff is green and all the eyes are green too. The green of the staff was achieved with a little Waywatcher Green over silver (I wanted a noticeable but subtle colouring).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-P1WhpHHRTss/U8OEoBJYHcI/AAAAAAAAB28/BlFgdPVUltA/s640/blogger-image-718792.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-P1WhpHHRTss/U8OEoBJYHcI/AAAAAAAAB28/BlFgdPVUltA/s640/blogger-image-718792.jpg"></a></div><br></div>I'm actually most surprised with how the rock he's standing on turned out as I wasn't sure if I'd be able to make it match the Agrellan Earth I used for the base. It was quite simple to do; Baneblade Brown with an edge highlight and drybrushing with Flayed One Flesh. I was shocked myself when it worked first time.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-XydngZaL8ZI/U8OEr0wLOkI/AAAAAAAAB3M/syRiU2cpEQU/s640/blogger-image--337039134.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-XydngZaL8ZI/U8OEr0wLOkI/AAAAAAAAB3M/syRiU2cpEQU/s640/blogger-image--337039134.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">While I'm loving the look of the cape/cloak/whatever I'm debating whether to repaint the fur. My original plan was to have it looking like a Fenrisian Wolf's fur but I don't think the effect is right. The idea behind this being to express the hatred between the Space Wolves and the Thousand Sons (according to my army fluff all of the Sons of the Cyclops were originally Thousand Sons) by proudly displaying a trophy from a battle but it's starting to look to me like he picked up a worn out rug and threw it on so that may be up for a repaint in future.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-KKXP_EOLLSU/U8OEtj2y7uI/AAAAAAAAB3U/iltNVnvt3Ag/s640/blogger-image-1193096391.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-KKXP_EOLLSU/U8OEtj2y7uI/AAAAAAAAB3U/iltNVnvt3Ag/s640/blogger-image-1193096391.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Everything else I've done on the model has been covered in other posts so I won't bore you with repetition but instead I'll just say that I've really enjoyed painting this guy and a lot of care went into him and this post has taken exactly the length of my commute to write. I'm off to a good start to the day I think.</div><br></div><br></div>DarkPhoenixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08427785071429212119noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286461420663847485.post-87459764790074141532014-07-13T00:49:00.001+01:002014-07-13T12:37:24.873+01:00The Birds and the BeesThe past few days have been pretty big for my hobby drive and to show for it I've got a few things to show you...<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-vSVlkEa4BKU/U8HJjnr5J4I/AAAAAAAAB2c/SbEJlR1lucQ/s640/blogger-image-1110096913.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-vSVlkEa4BKU/U8HJjnr5J4I/AAAAAAAAB2c/SbEJlR1lucQ/s640/blogger-image-1110096913.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Oh yes ladies and gents, I finished the Heldrake and 10 Horrors! I'm also very near to completion with my Tzeentch sorcerer in Terminator Armour, started playing around with a few ideas for the Tzeentch Herald I don't like (I like the individual components I used to make him but I'm not keen on them all together), worked on an Abaddon conversion, fixed my Exalted Seeker Chariot (the clam pack Herald looks much better on that) and a few other bits too.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-dYXgWXceG5g/U8HJbYa-8MI/AAAAAAAAB10/qLM8q8VrHck/s640/blogger-image-1584834730.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-dYXgWXceG5g/U8HJbYa-8MI/AAAAAAAAB10/qLM8q8VrHck/s640/blogger-image-1584834730.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Starting with the Heldrake I think my favourite part of him is the wiring under his neck. The problem being that I don't enjoy painting that much pink. A little bit on a Slaanesh Chosen is fine but that much... I'm not a fan. I decided to shake it up a little and embrace change so I painted them blue and green which was obviously a good idea as I finished in around a week!!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-KCgoi9d_jQQ/U8HJe1JbdPI/AAAAAAAAB2E/qwZ1qSYaD6U/s640/blogger-image-1622486532.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-KCgoi9d_jQQ/U8HJe1JbdPI/AAAAAAAAB2E/qwZ1qSYaD6U/s640/blogger-image-1622486532.jpg"></a></div><br></div>I decided not to do my usual fire with these guys as I wanted to try something a little different. It was my main thought while I was painting the Horrors and I still hadn't come up with a solution when I'd finished everything else so I dug around in my head a little. I had originally planned to paint these Horrors in purple (can't quite remember how they ended up blue) so I decided to create a little homage to the original idea and have purple flames. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-60G9mOXVitM/U8JIl9dPHGI/AAAAAAAAB2s/5QzXtxWOLYk/s640/blogger-image--1916607394.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-60G9mOXVitM/U8JIl9dPHGI/AAAAAAAAB2s/5QzXtxWOLYk/s640/blogger-image--1916607394.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Their feathers were actually inspired by a suggestion by @wilsongrahams on Twitter while I was painting a Tyranid Termagant (more on that another time) who suggested that I look through the Lizardmen army book for some colour scheme inspiration. While I didn't find anything in there I liked for my Tyranids I did quite like how the feathers were done so I went back through my pile o' White Dwarf magazines to the issue from the Lizardmen release and lo and behold there was a quick and easy way of doing the feathers in a way I liked. Basically they were base coated in Ceramite White, given a Lamenters Yellow glaze and then Waywatchers Green was applied in thin coats to create a blend effect. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So there we have it. After posting this I plan to get some household stuff done (boring) and then crack on with my Tzeentch Terminator sorcerer. I just need to finish his gun and his staff and he's done (I may have gotten impatient and already based him...). So if all goes to plan then I may be powering through another chunk of my armies today.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div>DarkPhoenixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08427785071429212119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286461420663847485.post-55371596870873842802014-06-29T23:14:00.001+01:002014-06-29T23:14:57.108+01:00The Silent WarI realise I've been rather quiet since 7th edition came in and that's because life has been getting in the way again. I have done some painting and played a few games which I'll summarise here.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-XsvsvtR8bBs/U7CP0uhaluI/AAAAAAAAB1U/looAsGApvwY/s640/blogger-image--1961477367.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-XsvsvtR8bBs/U7CP0uhaluI/AAAAAAAAB1U/looAsGApvwY/s640/blogger-image--1961477367.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">My very first game of 7th was with the awesome guys at #WS10, specifically Liam and his Blood Angels. Naturally I went with a Daemon/CSM list that contained all four Greater Daemons and a total of 22 Mastery Levels. To cut a long (several hours long in fact) story short it was the least bloodthirsty game ever. First blood didn't get taken until Liam's second turn and that was the only full unit on my side to die. On his side I took one unit with my Great Unclean one. That's it. Sure there was the odd model here and there but full squads? Just the two. Now it probably didn't help that we were constantly checking the rules for changes and we did get into a few tactics discussions along the way but even so I took 30 minutes for my first Psychic phase. I think the problem was that I tried to use all of my powers instead of picking and choosing the most relevant to each situation and also my experience with Summoning for Daemonology, while effective, was nowhere near as game breaking as the forums and YouTube videos had led me to believe. Cursed Earth was amazing and should be taken if possible. That +1 to Daemon Invulnerable saves was a life saver and it meant that nothing I summonned scattered. I also took a Tau tactic (gun line) and applied it to my Pink Horrors. I spread them across my deployment and had them direct their powers practically everywhere on the board. I think that could have been very effective later on in the game as more enemies were on the board and is definitely something I'll try again.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8Co38NtjOJw/U7CP3vBa4KI/AAAAAAAAB1k/PyFbQKcw6t0/s640/blogger-image-208239116.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8Co38NtjOJw/U7CP3vBa4KI/AAAAAAAAB1k/PyFbQKcw6t0/s640/blogger-image-208239116.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">My second battle was a test for my third as I needed to see what my half of the list could do (it was a doubles match). I've become renowned within #WS10 for my use of Daemons and Psykers and in all fairness I've definitely earned that reputation. As a result I decided to go with pure Chaos Space Marines and only took one Psyker (what? I can't completely ignore my playing style). In my test run I was tabled in turn 5 due to my own impatience and recklessness so all I had left on the table was my Helbrute and Abaddon. I have to say that Abaddon certainly proved he's worth the points as although he's only slightly above average in terms of shooting he REALLY shines in combat. In my test he single-handedly took down a 10 man unit of Chaos Space Marines (my opponent), a Rhino (unfortunately empty), an Obliterator and his Warlord who happened to be on a bike. In the doubles game he took a hull point from one tank and killed Coteaz in hand to hand (I deployed them so they had to foot slog) My Terminators on the other hand proved to be little more than expensive meat shields and I think I can probably get another bodyguard for a lot less points. Terminators are good but not the way I used them so for Abaddon's guard I'll try something else.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0NRafTUwEwA/U7CP2Ry0CaI/AAAAAAAAB1c/mgXUO8dXezI/s640/blogger-image--576001552.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0NRafTUwEwA/U7CP2Ry0CaI/AAAAAAAAB1c/mgXUO8dXezI/s640/blogger-image--576001552.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I have to say that I really enjoy 7th so far. Couple of niggling rules issues aside (mostly with how my Psykers generate powers) I think it's been really well put together and somehow seems to work better than 6th and I know at least a few of #WS10 feel the same way.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">For now though I'll say goodbye and goodnight but I've got lots more to share over the next few days so please do stay tuned.</div><br></div><br></div><br></div>DarkPhoenixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08427785071429212119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286461420663847485.post-50652247274415663872014-06-29T17:50:00.001+01:002014-06-29T17:50:06.887+01:00Nerdvana part 2I didn't want to add all the pictures to the last post because let's face it, it's pretty long already. So now you get Nerdvana part 2 which (aside from this paragraph and the odd comment) will be almost entirely pictures from the day so enjoy! Well at least I do now that I'm no longer needing to power nap there and back.<div><br></div><div>So April 6th (told you it was overdue) saw the #WS10 gaming group descend on Warhammer World along with several other gaming groups from around the West Midlands for a huge play off. Originally intended to be an inter-group tournament, people on the teams being unable to make it meant that the teams would have been uneven and the event turned into an almost free play against anyone available which ended up being a lot of fun. I was able to play a grudge match against Stuart's Astra Militarum (under the 5th edition codex as the new one wasn't released) and then played against someone totally new who used the mortal enemy of any daemon: Grey Knights. </div><div><br></div><div>Before I get into the details of the matches I have to say that I was both impressed and a little underwhelmed by by the place at the same time. I'll get the negatives out of the way first because there aren't that many; firstly I always thought the place was bigger (still pretty big but much like my models I always thought it would be bigger, maybe I have a thing about size) and secondly I did expect the shop to have things the normal shops don't have what with it being in the middle of the production centre. Probably a good thing though as I'd have spent far too much money. So now the negative thoughts are out of the way, time for the positives!!! Even if I expected it to be bigger the place was still pretty damn big. The gaming hall had so many tables in it it's almost unbelievable and once we got there and the day progressed I was surprised to see that there were still available tables considering how many people there were in the gaming hall. </div><div><br></div><div>Another awesome feature of Warhammer World was the miniatures gallery which is basically a room with the walls lined with display cases that are (usually) filled with all the minis in the GW range. I'll include some pictures of this a little later but I should warn you that I just took pictures of the models I liked so there's certainly nothing of the Imperium in there (though it's been so long I can't actually remember exactly what I snapped besides the obvious). </div><div><br></div><div>The whole point of the trip though was the battling and boy did I battle! The first match I played was against Stuart and his Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum. As with our first match we decided to forget objectives and funky deployment zones and just decided to smack each other around to see who can kill the most stuff. I much prefer that to counting victory points and holding objectives as it's far more pleasing to Khorne. Now I know I should give a blow by blow here of what happened in each turn but it was over a month ago and I've been to bed since then so instead I'll do Stu a favour and link you to his pretty awesome report of our battle (you're welcome dude). http://listenupmaggots.wordpress.com/2014/04/21/ws10gamings-visit-to-warhammer-world/</div><div><br></div><div>Just as a quick summary though, the first turn saw me keep a decent percentage of my forces in reserve so what was on the board did get smacked pretty hard. Oh I should say that my list for this was quite experimental as I chose units that a) I've never played before and b) don't get played often in the YouTube videos I watched (and I watched a lot). I borrowed a Soul Grinder from Nick (cheers dude!!), I used Daemonettes, my Skull Cannon and switched back to my good old Great Unclean One. I don't care if he stinks like a slaughterhouse in the middle of a hot summers day, I love that little rotting pus sack. Even without Iron Arm he was still stupidly hard to wound (love it). My Skull Cannon was fantastic and wiped out a whole unit on it's own in one hit which was awesome. The Soul Grinder was pretty damn cool too so I'll be looking at getting me one of those I think and even my Thousand Sons were pretty awesome; they holed up in a building and what couldn't be reached with a Bolter got blasted by psychic powers which was then backed up with the Pink Horrors. So much psychic death!! My Heldrake and Daemon Prince worked together to vector strike many many units and my Daemonettes with their Herald (wielding a lash of torment) glanced a chimaera to death and then charged the surviving crew. The Warp Storm Table as always provided some support which was pretty cool and I realised that I dislike plasma weapons immensely as I didn't get a single shot off with my plasma gun on my CSMs. Oh yeah, the score for my Daemons v Stu's AM currently stands at 2-0 to me. </div><div><br></div><div>My second match of the day was against the dreaded Grey Knights. Now I could have refused to play and I was given the choice but I wanted to play to see what I could do after warming up against Stu. Now before I go into this, I must remind you that my list was very experimental without much real thought about taking on more competitive lists and the list I took on was very much tailored to a tournament style of play. I was more concerned with learning the capabilities of my units than with playing to kill but even so I don't think the game was that much of a crushing defeat and in fact I walked away from that table with my head held high and I learned a lot about my own units in the process. For starters I learned just how truly devastating the Skull Cannon can be after it managed to scatter and struck my Daemonettes and Herald which inevitably killed the entire unit just before they could charge anything. :( *sigh*. I guess Khorne's hatred for Slaanesh won out over killing a blob of Grey Knights. I got them eventually with my Heldrake which performed admirably and killed something each turn from the moment it flew on the table in turn 2 to the moment it finally got blown up in turn 4. My Thousand Sons weathered a lot of firepower as well, though my Aspiring Sorcerer did fall prey to one of those psychic missile things from his flier. Which he had two of but kept one for anti air and one for anti infantry. He had two dread knights too and my soul grinder took one on and while it did get blown to bits it had done enough damage to take the knight down with him. Not ideal as I still had two fliers to deal with but I was pleased that he was one evil hard to kill thing down. My Horrors did reasonably well too considering that Grey Knights have a nasty habit of denying the witch a lot and they took out a few models too. In the end though I did get completely hammered when he trapped me in a corner with nothing but two units of Horrors and their accompanying Herald. No amount of Divination and Warp Storm was going to win it when it got to that point but I waited until the very end so as not to deny my opponent the sweet joys of totally tabling me. Which he did.</div><div><br></div><div>This game taught me more about what my units are capable of than my victory did as I saw what happens when Daemons are overwhelmed and what a single mistake can cost in terms of winning and losing. The first mistake I made in that respect was that in the turn that my Great Unclean One hit the board I should have deployed the Portalglyph but I forgot and almost lost the opportunity to do so in the assault phase. Another such mistake was that I constantly forgot to cast prescience on my Horrors so while I did get an extra dice worth of shots I think I would have done more damage overall with re rolling failed hits. I also learned that the Daemons are horribly susceptible to the weapons that the Grey Knights have as my Daemon Prince and Plague Bearers discovered when they were wiped out all too quickly. My Thousand Sons again held up quite well but in turn 4 they got in the way of a charge and were killed outright with a multiple charge. I'd seen those in the videos online but it was interesting to see how it works in practice, even if it was against my beautiful Daemons.</div><div><br></div><div>Of course with the new edition coming out and the new psychic phase (which I've already talked about) and the new Unbound army concept I'm pretty sure that the way I play is going to change and that most of my learning and experimenting will go out of the window while I figure out my style. I imagine I'll stay Psyker heavy but who knows? I guess we'll find out...</div><div><br></div><div>Edit: I've found some images of my battle with Stuart so I'll post those soon :)</div><div><br></div>DarkPhoenixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08427785071429212119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286461420663847485.post-71626154731442318992014-05-18T14:27:00.000+01:002014-05-18T14:27:49.206+01:00Hel Rising Pt 3Welcome back to the final part of my three part look at the new (well not so much now but hair splitting much?) Helbrute dataslate. In the first part we looked at the rather versatile Helcult and the potentially devastating Mayhem Pack came in the second part which leaves this part to be dedicated to the Helfist Murderpack. Let's just ignore the name, it's not great but the formation is pretty funky as we'll see.<br />
<div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
The first thing to notice with the Murderpack is that the formation gains a leader. Apparently a bunch of twisted, warped and psychotic half-dead guys trapped in a massive hunk of metal for all eternity turn into Space Marines when there's 5 of them (that's how many Helbrutes are in this formation by the way). Well ok they don't quite go that far but I digress. One of the Helbrutes in the formation gains the (Character) unit type, the Aura of Dark Glory upgrade (5++ save) and the other Helbrutes can make Look Out, Sir! Rolls to save their leader if they are within 6". Hard to imagine a Helbrute taking a bullet for another but apparently it happens.<br />
<br />
Now let's just get over the shock of Helbrutes with thinking abilities and move on. I've probably done this backwards but Helbrutes that think was just shocking. The basics of the formation are that it consists of five Helbrutes with whatever weapons you like on any of them (they don't all have the be equipped the same way), they are a vehicle squadron and as far as I can tell they don't have to stay in any kind of unit coherency (I may be wrong though as I don't use all that many vehicles). Now back to the Leader as it is really this aspect that gives this formation it's kick. While the leader is alive any Helbrute with a Crazed marker doesn't roll on the table but instead the controlling player can choose the result!! The only downside is that one result applies to all Helbrutes with Crazed markers so you do need to be able to balance your tactics on the fly to compensate for any lost firepower you might have.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now I want you to imagine the scene... Your Helbrute Champion is locked in battle with an enemy champion. They're trading blows that would crack the bones of a Titan, cracking off the odd shot when the opportunity presents itself and general fighting an epic battle to the death. Picture there in your head? Good. Now imagine that enemy managing to get lucky and strike the Helbrute with a killing blow. In your mind what would you expect the others to do, considering that they're insanely homicidal wrecks that have been driven even more insane and homicidal by being stuck in a box inside a machine for several millennia. That's right, they'd get pissed and that's exactly what happens; they gain the Rage rule once the leader bites the dust. Now I'm not saying that Rage isn't a good rule because it is but I personally think I prefer being able to choose which Crazed result you get. My advice here would be to make the leader an extreme ranged attacker so there's less chance of losing him. Add in a couple of mid-range weapons and a couple of assault specialists and you'll have a very well rounded formation that can bring a lot of hurt in a lot of ways. Also there's the fact that this formation gives you not one but five very dangerous units that, when used well, can really mess up an enemy army by presenting a lot of dangers at the same time. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The main downside of this formation is that it will cost a fortune both in terms of points and pounds/dollars/euros/whatever currency you work in. Helbrutes are over £30 a pop so 5 will set you back over £150!! That's dedication to the Helbrute right there. They're also 100 points standard and then they'll need upgrading to be effective. Even in a 2000 point game you're looking at over 25% of your total points on 5 models... Now I can't say they're easy to kill as I don't know how the new vehicle damage rules will work but for the next week at least they can be glanced to death so you just have to balance the risk with the benefits and your playing style. For me this isn't a formation I'm likely to use as I'm not a huge vehicle user; I'm more infantry and psychic powers but for those that do like vehicle formations this could be a good one.</div>
